Past Minds

It saddens me to think

my own mother

or grandmother

or aunt

or any males in my family

once felt the need to suppress

memories, madness, or mayhem

within their minds

mental health was a joke

to the past life of the world

mental problems were not justified

as real battles fighting the good fight

what once was a disconnect and disregard

between myself and my ancestors

what once was a tense conversation

said in whispers in back rooms

is now a core thread that binds us together

what once was a jealousy of a “good life”

is now a pure pity for oblivious minds
